Jigardhanda from Madurai

The beverage i crave for on a sunny day (or any day) in Madurai is the Jigardhanda. It is a complicated concoction made with hand-cranked ice cream, sea weeds, extra-thick cream of condensed milk and syrup. This 20 rupees stuff is given to you in a glass with a spoon to enable you to mix the ingredients and the scoop of ice cream while you drink it. To tell you the truth, unless you drink and eat the delectable stuff, it is impossible to convey the taste of this beverage.

Somehow, i couldnt get the picture of the jigardhanda before me taking a dive on it myself and hence the picture of a half glass of jigardhanda. Madurai has a long list of not-to-missed spots, but "The world famous jigardhanda store" takes the cake for the most delicious one! With a scoop of ice cream on the top :)

  1. Very interesting ! never heard of such a drink. For me it would be too greasy when it is hot.
BTW you have to drink the almond tea very hot !

    1. I dont think there is an English equivalent for it. It is not a Tamil word too. The word just defines the drink.

  6. Wow! I too have never heard of this. Is it peculiar to Madurai? I definitely don't have any recollection of anyone selling it in Hyderabad.

    1. Yes, it is totally unique to Madurai. Actually i remember the tiny push cart with which that person started it during my school days... Now, it is a booming business!
